Illinois gubernatorial candidate Darren Bailey and his wife, Cindy, are mourning an unimaginable loss. On October 22, their son Zachary, his wife Kelsey, and their children, Vada Rose, 12, and Samuel, 7, died in a helicopter crash in Montana. Their other grandson, Finn, 10, survived. A campaign statement said the couple is “finding comfort in their faith, their family, and the prayers of so many.”
The National Transportation Safety Board confirmed the crash involved a Robinson Helicopters R66 near Ekalaka, Montana. Zachary was piloting the aircraft at the time. Darren Bailey’s running mate, Aaron Del Mar, described the tragedy as “soul-crushing” and said it was a loss that “was never supposed to happen.”
Zachary had earned his pilot’s license through a Christian ministry and served as a youth pastor. He, along with his family, was known for contributions to farming, ministry, and community service, reflecting a life dedicated to faith and helping others. Del Mar highlighted Zachary’s character, calling him “just a good guy.”
The family has received an outpouring of support and prayers from across the state. Del Mar expressed hope that Finn will grow up aware of the family’s legacy of love, service, and faith. In the wake of the tragedy, the community and loved ones continue to rally around Darren and Cindy Bailey as they grieve and honor the memory of their son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren.
The NTSB investigation into the crash is ongoing.
