Far-left actor Tom Hanks angered many following his portrayal of a “typical white male Trump voter” as “racist” during the 50th anniversary of Saturday Night Live (SNL). Hanks reprised his role as Doug, a clueless individual wearing a MAGA hat and an American Eagle shirt. In a Black Jeopardy skit, he hesitated to shake hands with Kenan Thompson’s character, Darnell Hayes, who is Black.
The backlash on social media was swift. Critics argued that SNL’s portrayal of Trump supporters as racist was “disgusting” and “tired.” Some users expressed disappointment with Hanks, claiming his career would suffer for disrespecting half the country.
Despite Trump’s enduring popularity, with recent polls showing strong approval ratings, many found the skit offensive. Critics claimed it reflected poorly on both Hanks and SNL, with some arguing it contributed to the show’s declining ratings.
