Donald Trump suggests ‘solution’ for Canada to avoid tariffs in brutal message as trade war escalates

Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing a 25% tariff on goods imported from Canada and Mexico, and a 10% tax on China. The tariffs, effective February 4, are part of Trump’s efforts to hold these countries accountable for their promises to stop the flow of drugs, especially fentanyl, into the U.S. The order cites growing fentanyl production in Canada and record levels of illegal border crossings. In response, Canada plans to impose a 25% counter-tariff on $155 billion of U.S. goods. Trump suggested on Truth Social that Canada could avoid the tariffs by becoming the “51st State,” claiming this would result in lower taxes and better military protection. Canada and Mexico have rejected the tariffs, with Mexico vowing to defend its sovereignty.
