That was the first thing I noticed.<br data-start=\"381\" data-end=\"384\" \/>Two deer stepped out of the woods while I was tossing hay. The smaller one stared straight at me, unblinking\u2014like it knew something.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"520\" data-end=\"798\">It walked up to the fence and dropped a bundle at my feet: dark fabric wrapped around a small wooden box. Inside was a silver locket, tarnished and carved with strange symbols that made my skin prickle. When I looked up, the deer was already backing toward the trees, waiting.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"800\" data-end=\"813\">I followed.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"815\" data-end=\"1057\">The forest grew unnaturally silent until I reached a clearing I\u2019d never seen before. In the center stood a twisted black oak. Beneath it, freshly turned soil hid a stone tablet etched with the same markings. Beneath that\u2014a sealed parchment.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1059\" data-end=\"1194\">\u201cFor the one who is chosen,\u201d it read. \u201cThe truth is not safe. The truth is not gentle. Follow the signs. This is only the beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1196\" data-end=\"1287\">That night I couldn\u2019t sleep. The locket felt heavy in my pocket, as if it were breathing.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1289\" data-end=\"1499\">In the morning, I searched old archives. Buried in local folklore was a story about <strong data-start=\"1373\" data-end=\"1385\">The Veil<\/strong>, an ancient order sworn to guard a dangerous secret. Their mark matched the symbols. Their messengers\u2014the deer.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1501\" data-end=\"1591\">Now I know this wasn\u2019t chance. I was chosen.<br data-start=\"1545\" data-end=\"1548\" \/>By whom, and for what\u2014I still don\u2019t know.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1593\" data-end=\"1612\">But someone does.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1614\" data-end=\"1637\">And they\u2019re watching.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1639\" data-end=\"1754\">Because sometimes, it\u2019s not the woods that haunt you\u2014<br data-start=\"1692\" data-end=\"1695\" \/>it\u2019s the fact that something in them has already found you.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Not Everything in the Woods Is Random They weren\u2019t afraid.
