I met Brandon a year ago\u2014steady, polite, the type who calls you \u201cdarlin\u2019.\u201d He proposed fast, his mother Janet smiling like a queen at our engagement dinner. I\u2019d met her before: pearls, judgment, and compliments with teeth.<\/p>\n
At the family beach house, Brandon announced we\u2019d be in separate rooms. \u201cMom thinks it\u2019s improper,\u201d he said. I swallowed my irritation. The next morning Janet asked me to tidy her room\u2014\u201cpractice for the lady of the house.\u201d On the beach she demanded cocktails and sunscreen, then called me rude when I refused to rub her feet.
