Ilhan Omar Faces Scrutiny Over Alleged Student Loan Default<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"172\" data-end=\"404\">Democratic Rep. <strong data-start=\"188\" data-end=\"202\">Ilhan Omar<\/strong> of Minnesota is under renewed scrutiny after the <strong data-start=\"252\" data-end=\"296\">American Accountability Foundation (AAF)<\/strong> alleged she defaulted on federally backed student loans while advocating for nationwide debt forgiveness.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"406\" data-end=\"803\">In a letter to <strong data-start=\"421\" data-end=\"451\">House Speaker Mike Johnson<\/strong>, AAF President Thomas Jones claimed that Omar, who earns <strong data-start=\"509\" data-end=\"530\">$174,000 annually<\/strong>, is in collection proceedings for loans totaling between <strong data-start=\"588\" data-end=\"611\">$15,001 and $50,000<\/strong>, according to her financial disclosures. Jones called the situation \u201cunconscionable and embarrassing,\u201d noting that if the loans are in default, the financial burden could fall on taxpayers.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"805\" data-end=\"1111\">The watchdog group also suggested that Omar might be using her congressional influence to discourage the <strong data-start=\"910\" data-end=\"937\">Department of Education<\/strong> from pursuing collections, though no public evidence has been provided. AAF filed a <strong data-start=\"1022\" data-end=\"1038\">FOIA request<\/strong> seeking records of any communications between Omar and the department.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1113\" data-end=\"1336\">The letter urged Speaker Johnson to consider withholding Omar\u2019s congressional salary and directing payments to her loan servicer, <strong data-start=\"1243\" data-end=\"1253\">Nelnet<\/strong>, until the debt is resolved. Omar\u2019s office has not commented on the allegations.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1338\" data-end=\"1626\">AAF, a conservative ethics watchdog, has previously targeted Democratic lawmakers, and the claims have sparked debate over Omar\u2019s advocacy for student debt cancellation.
