The smaller one stared right into me, like it <em data-start=\"214\" data-end=\"220\">knew<\/em> something.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"235\" data-end=\"428\">I snapped a photo, joked online about \u201cunexpected visitors,\u201d and went back to work. Then the smaller deer approached the fence and dropped something at my feet\u2014a bundle wrapped in dark cloth.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"430\" data-end=\"638\">Inside was a small wooden box, old and carved with strange symbols. A silver locket rested inside, heavy and cold. When I looked up, the deer had turned toward the forest, pausing as if asking me to follow.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"640\" data-end=\"933\">The woods grew silent\u2014no wind, no birds. In a hidden clearing stood an enormous oak, its branches black against the sky. The deer vanished. At the tree\u2019s base, the ground had been disturbed. I dug and uncovered a stone tablet etched with the same markings. Beneath it was a sealed parchment.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"935\" data-end=\"1070\">\u201cFor the one who is chosen,\u201d it read. \u201cThe truth is not safe. The truth is not gentle. Follow the signs. This is only the beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1072\" data-end=\"1270\">Later, I searched the local archives. An old legend surfaced\u2014of <em data-start=\"1136\" data-end=\"1146\">The Veil<\/em>, a secret order said to guard a hidden power. The deer were their messengers. The symbols, their mark. The locket? A key.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1272\" data-end=\"1353\">Now I can\u2019t shake the feeling that someone\u2014or something\u2014knows I\u2019ve been chosen.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1355\" data-end=\"1445\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Sometimes, it\u2019s not the answers that haunt you.
