I boarded the plane with a knot in my stomach and a teething baby on my hip. Six months ago, I buried my husband. Three months later, I held our son, Ethan\u2014his father’s brow, his father\u2019s chin. I was barely surviving, sleep-deprived and broke. When the car gave out, I swallowed my pride and flew home.<\/p>\n
Ethan started screaming after takeoff\u2014back-arched, red-faced wailing. I tried everything. Passengers stared. A man in my row sneered, \u201cCan you shut that kid up?\u201d His words hit harder than the turbulence.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m trying,\u201d I said, rocking Ethan.<\/p>\n
\u201cTry harder.\u201d When I reached for a change of clothes, he growled, \u201cNot here. Lock yourself in the bathroom.\u201d<\/p>\n
As I walked the aisle, humiliated, a calm voice stopped me. A man in a suit gestured toward business class. \u201cHere. Take your time.\u201d I protested. \u201cIt is now,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Ethan quieted. I breathed. The man disappeared\u2014back to economy, into my old seat.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeace at last,\u201d my former seatmate gloated.<\/p>\n
The suit turned. \u201cMr. Cooper?\u201d Color drained from the man’s face. \u201cYou recognize me?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cMr. Coleman… I didn\u2019t know\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI watched you berate a grieving mother. When no one important is watching, your character shows. I saw yours. When we land, you\u2019ll hand in your badge. You\u2019re done.\u201d<\/p>\n
Later, Mr. Coleman passed my seat.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re doing a good job,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
