The House Smelled Like Betrayal<\/strong><\/p>\n

The lock turned, and the house\u2014my grandmother\u2019s beach cottage\u2014hit me with the stench of old beer and rot. Not salt or sunshine. This was supposed to be our fresh start\u2014me, Daniel, Rosie.<\/p>\n

Instead, it was wrecked.<\/p>\n

Sticky floors. Cracked furniture. Bottles and cigarette butts. And snoring in the back room\u2014Susan, my mother-in-law, in Gran\u2019s bed, boots on the quilt.<\/p>\n

\u201cSurprise,\u201d she said, stretching. She\u2019d rented it out to art students. \u201cThey paid cash.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou weren\u2019t using it,\u201d she shrugged. \u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n

She\u2019d taken the key from my home. Invaded the last piece of Gran I had left.<\/p>\n

Steven arrived, no pastries\u2014just gloves, trash bags, and quiet fury. We cleaned while the kids played outside. Susan muttered the whole time. \u201cIt\u2019s just a house,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not,\u201d I replied. \u201cAnd you\u2019re paying for all of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Later, she called, claiming her house had flooded. \u201cLet me stay,\u201d she begged.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou made money renting my<\/em> home,\u201d I said. Then hung up.<\/p>\n

That night, the air smelled of lemon cleaner and sea salt. The house wasn\u2019t healed, but it was ours again. The kids built sandcastles with Steven, laughter threading through the porch. We grilled, made cocoa, and whispered dreams for next time\u2014pink curtains, forts, and secret passwords.<\/p>\n

Home, I realized, isn\u2019t walls or rocking chairs. It\u2019s the people who refuse to give up\u2014on each other, on healing, on a second chance.<\/p>\n
