He was fifteen\u2014brilliant in flashes, stubborn, and sweet. He called me \u201cDree\u201d and laughed like he meant it.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"430\" data-end=\"468\">I should\u2019ve stayed. Instead, I packed.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"470\" data-end=\"548\">\u201cYou can stay,\u201d I told my husband. \u201cBut I\u2019ve worked too hard to give this up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"550\" data-end=\"620\">He flew to California to help his ex. Then quieter: \u201cI think you\u2019re exactly who I thought you were. I just didn\u2019t want to see it.\u201d Click.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"810\" data-end=\"918\">When we docked, I hid in a motel. Two days later: <em data-start=\"860\" data-end=\"918\">I\u2019m moving out. I\u2019ll get my stuff when you\u2019re not there.<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"920\" data-end=\"1000\">Then Lir\u2019s mom, Rania, called. Over coffee, she slid me a photo of Lir at eight.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1002\" data-end=\"1192\">\u201cHe told me he wanted dinner with you both next week. His idea,\u201d she said. \u201cHe knew about the cruise. He said he was glad you were taking time for yourselves. He didn\u2019t want to be a burden.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1194\" data-end=\"1281\">I sobbed, loud and messy, because I hadn\u2019t been forgiven\u2014but I also hadn\u2019t been erased.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1283\" data-end=\"1414\">Later, I told my husband: \u201cI didn\u2019t know how to show up for grief I didn\u2019t think I had the right to. I chose control. I was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1416\" data-end=\"1508\">\u201cYou always thought love meant staying out of the way,\u201d he said. \u201cBut love needs you in it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1510\" data-end=\"1614\">Now we volunteer with grieving families.
