People only just realising what Pope Francis’ real name was as Pope Leo is elected

Pope Leo, aged 69, has become the first American to be elected pope, hailing from Chicago.

Formerly known as Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, he was chosen after just under two days of conclave voting, with white smoke signaling the decision.

A moderate figure within the Church, Pope Leo is known for advocating for migrants and the poor. He previously served as a missionary in Peru and has publicly criticized Donald Trump’s immigration policies. He was only made cardinal in 2023 and is described as humble and service-oriented.

The name Leo—now Pope Leo XIV—follows papal tradition and may pay tribute to Pope Leo XIII, a champion of Catholic social justice. His predecessor, Pope Francis, was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio and chose his name to honor St. Francis of Assisi.
