The first Arctic outbreak of the season is set to sweep across the US during Thanksgiving, bringing freezing temperatures and potential snowfall.

A blast of Arctic air from Siberia will mark the first major cold snap of the season starting this last week of November 2024. Weather Track US shared on X that forecasts show approaching Arctic air mass will cause temperatures to plummet as much as 25°F below seasonal averages in some areas.

Most of the continental US will see temperatures at least 10°F lower than usual, making for a chilly Thanksgiving holiday.

Regions near the Great Lakes and Northeast should brace for snow, while freezing temperatures could impact southern areas, including the Gulf Coast and parts of the Southwest. The National Weather Service warned of “dangerous wind chills across the Upper Midwest and heavy snows downwind of the Great Lakes.”

Arctic outbreaks can damage infrastructure, agriculture, and ecosystems. Frozen pipes may burst, and sudden temperature drops could cause fish kills. Crops like citrus, tropical plants, and strawberries are at risk, while improper use of heaters may lead to fires or carbon monoxide poisoning.

Thanksgiving travelers face challenges with rain in the East, snow in the Northeast, and potential thunderstorms in the Southeast. Heavy snowfall near the Great Lakes and freezing conditions in 10 southern states, including Alabama, Georgia, and Virginia, could disrupt travel from November 27 to December 1.

AAA anticipates record-breaking Thanksgiving travel, with nearly 80 million people traveling over 50 miles. Drivers are urged to stay alert amid wet roads, fog, and increased traffic. Whether traveling or celebrating at home, caution is key to ensuring a safe holiday.
