DHS stated that the employees bypassed leadership to make these decisions, which Elon Musk criticized on X, calling it an improper use of disaster relief funds. Musk claimed FEMA spent $59 million on luxury hotels for migrants instead of American disaster relief. In response to FEMA’s handling of Hurricane Helene recovery in North Carolina, former President Trump called for reforms, criticizing FEMA’s slow response and suggesting that states should take more responsibility for disaster recovery. Trump also pledged to help North Carolina recover swiftly, accusing FEMA of neglecting the state’s needs.
