Waters Ordered To Pay Massive Fine For Violating Campaign Finance Laws

Rep. Maxine Waters’ campaign has agreed to pay a $68,000 fine after the FEC found violations, including misreporting finances, accepting excessive donations, and making prohibited cash disbursements.

The “Citizens for Waters” committee took $19,000 in excess contributions and made $7,000 in improper cash payments.

The campaign must now send its treasurer to FEC training. Waters’ attorney claimed the errors weren’t intentional. Waters, in Congress since 1991, has faced scrutiny before. In 2023, her campaign reportedly paid her daughter nearly $200,000 for mailer work. In 2018, the FEC dismissed a similar charge. Waters also made headlines for controversial comments, including suggesting Melania Trump’s immigration status be investigated and criticizing Elon Musk for alleged overreach. Despite repeated controversies, Waters remains a prominent Democratic figure, currently serving as the ranking member on the House Financial Services Committee.
