DOJ Sues Gov. Walz Over Program Favoring Illegal Immigrants Over Citizens

The Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against Minnesota and Governor Tim Walz over a state program offering financial aid and in-state tuition to illegal immigrants, claiming it discriminates against U.S. citizens. The program, part of the Minnesota Dream Act, allows undocumented students access to benefits not available to out-of-state citizens. Attorney General Pam Bondi said the DOJ recently won a similar case in Texas and intends to fight this policy nationwide.

The lawsuit also targets Minnesota’s Office of Higher Education and State Attorney General Keith Ellison. It follows President Trump’s April executive order directing agencies to eliminate policies that favor illegal immigrants over citizens. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court handed Trump a major win by limiting federal judges’ power to issue nationwide injunctions, a tool often used to block Trump’s executive orders.

The ruling allows Trump’s order limiting birthright citizenship to take effect in parts of the country. That policy would deny automatic citizenship to children born in the U.S. unless at least one parent is a citizen or permanent resident.
