Senate Democrats successfully forced a name change to President Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” just before its narrow passage in a 51-50 vote. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer cited the Byrd Rule to strike the title, labeling the legislation instead as simply “the act.” Schumer slammed the bill as a “big ugly betrayal,” warning it would result in millions losing health insurance, job losses, and increased child poverty.
The bill passed along party lines, with Vice President JD Vance casting the tie-breaking vote. Three Republicans—Rand Paul, Susan Collins, and Thom Tillis—opposed the measure. Tillis announced his retirement days before the vote.
Schumer denied the name change was aimed at provoking Trump, saying the truth was more important than branding. Progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez called the bill “a betrayal,” particularly for its Medicaid cuts.
Vance defended the legislation as a win for working families, highlighting tax cuts and increased border security funding. The bill now heads back to the House, with Republican leaders aiming to finalize it by July 4.
