A Border Patrol official announced Monday that agents will remain in Los Angeles “until the mission is accomplished,” amid a major immigration operation at MacArthur Park. Armed personnel from ICE, CBP, and military units deployed by President Trump arrived in force, patrolling on foot, horseback, and in armored vehicles.
Democratic Mayor Karen Bass, who was scheduled to meet Governor Gavin Newsom that morning, confronted federal agents at the park, demanding their immediate departure and condemning the raid as a “political stunt.” She described the scene as resembling “a city under siege” and called the presence of armed vehicles in a public park “outrageous and un-American.”
After a brief discussion with CBP Assistant Chief Patrol Agent David Kim, Bass said the agents began to leave, but Border Patrol El Centro Sector Chief Gregory Bovino countered that federal forces would not retreat and insisted, “The federal government does not work for Karen Bass.”
Bass and the Los Angeles City Council also reported that the sweep disrupted a children’s summer camp, forcing staff to relocate kids to a basement while waiting for the area to clear. It remains unclear if any arrests were made, as activists had warned residents to leave before the operation began.
