Mamdani’s Socialist Allies To Primary Hakeem Jeffries, Other N.Y. House Dems

Democratic socialist allies of Zohran Mamdani are reportedly considering launching primary challenges in 2026 against several prominent New York City congressional Democrats, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. The move follows Mamdani’s recent and unexpected victory in the Democratic mayoral primary, where he defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo and nine others. The 33-year-old Queens assemblyman is now positioned to become the city’s first Muslim mayor, signaling a potential ideological shift within the Democratic Party toward the far-left.

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), energized by Mamdani’s win, emphasized that the campaign is part of a larger national movement. In the aftermath, DSA leaders are reportedly targeting not only Jeffries, but also other House Democrats like Reps. Ritchie Torres, Jerry Nadler, Dan Goldman, and Yvette Clarke, accusing them of being too moderate or out of touch with progressive constituents.

Jeffries’ senior political advisor, Andre Richardson, warned of a “forceful and unrelenting” counteroffensive against any challengers. “If Team Gentrification wants a primary fight, we will teach them a painful lesson,” he said, referencing Mamdani’s allies. Richardson also stated that Jeffries remains focused on combating “MAGA extremists” who have pushed sweeping conservative policies under President Trump’s second term.

Tensions are escalating between establishment Democrats and the DSA wing, particularly in Brooklyn, where DSA Assemblywoman Phara Souffrant Forrest and State Senator Jabari Brisport have already defeated past primary challengers backed by Jeffries. Their victories have emboldened DSA supporters and raised the stakes for future contests.

Forrest responded defiantly to renewed threats of political retaliation, posting on social media that Jeffries “should be careful what he wishes for.” Citing her and Brisport’s past victories with over 67% and 70% of the vote respectively, she added, “If the leader wants another public beatdown, he knows where to find me.”
