What Are Fungi on the Skin?
Skin fungi are natural microorganisms, but they can overgrow in warm, humid conditions causing infections like ringworm, cutaneous candidiasis, nail fungus (onychomycosis), and pityriasis versicolor.
Ringworm: What Is It?
Ringworm is a contagious fungal infection causing red, round, itchy rashes. Different types affect various body parts: tinea corporis (arms/torso), tinea capitis (scalp, causing hair loss), athlete’s foot (toes), jock itch (groin), and tinea unguium (nails).
How Do Fungi Spread?
Fungi spread through direct contact with infected people, animals, or contaminated items, and thrive in damp areas like pools or gyms. Poor hygiene and tight clothing increase risk.
Treatment
Mild cases respond to topical antifungals like terbinafine or ketoconazole. Severe infections may need oral antifungals such as fluconazole. Natural remedies like apple cider vinegar or tea tree oil may help but shouldn’t replace medical treatment.
Prevention
Keep skin clean and dry, avoid sharing personal items, wear footwear in public showers, and boost immunity through healthy habits. Consult a dermatologist for persistent symptoms.
