Fitness Enthusiast Suffers Multiple Cardiac Arrests After Energy Drink Consumption
Jazmin Garza, a 20-year-old American fitness enthusiast, unexpectedly collapsed after a workout, experiencing severe vertigo, convulsions, and eventually cardiac arrest. Her boyfriend, shocked to find her unresponsive, performed CPR until paramedics arrived and revived her with a defibrillator — but her ordeal had only begun.
During the ambulance ride, Jazmin’s heart stopped multiple times, one arrest lasting up to five minutes. Each episode caused severe damage to her lungs, kidneys, and heart due to oxygen deprivation. Doctors warned her family that only a miracle could bring her back. She was placed on life support and connected to multiple machines, including an oxygenation system, dialysis, and an implanted defibrillator.
Prior to collapsing, Jazmin had consumed a highly caffeinated energy drink — something she didn’t usually do. She recalled feeling pale and dizzy before fainting. Though she’d never had a seizure before, her boyfriend described the episode as resembling one.
After two weeks in critical condition, Jazmin began to recover. Doctors couldn’t pinpoint a cause but suspected a combination of caffeine and a hidden heart condition. Now recovering, she urges others to listen to their bodies and be cautious with stimulants — before it’s too late.
