Jerry Adler, beloved for his role as Hesh Rabkin on The Sopranos, has passed away at 96 in his New York City home.
Born in Brooklyn in 1929, Adler’s roots were deeply tied to Jewish and Yiddish theater. Before acting, he was a renowned Broadway stage manager, producer, and director, contributing to over 50 productions including My Fair Lady. He worked alongside legends like Katharine Hepburn and Richard Burton.
Adler’s acting career began in his 60s, sparked by a casting director’s encouragement. Over the next 30 years, he appeared in notable shows like Northern Exposure, The West Wing, and films including Manhattan Murder Mystery. His role as Hesh Rabkin became a fan favorite on The Sopranos.
He remained active on Broadway, acting in works by Elaine May and Larry David. Adler is survived by his wife Joan Laxman and four daughters. Last year, he published his memoir, Too Funny for Words, sharing stories from his rich career.
