AM I WRONG FOR BEING UPSET THAT MY 71-YEAR-OLD MOM SPENT HER MONEY ON TRAVELING INSTEAD OF HELPING ME WITH MY BILLS?

When I first read my mom’s text saying she’d “worked her whole life to give me everything I needed” and now it was her time, my stomach dropped. If she’d given me everything, why was I drowning in debt, rent due, and a looming car payment?

I called her instead of texting back. I told her I was barely keeping my head above water while she enjoyed trips and dinners. She said, “This is my time now,” and reminded me she’d put her dreams on hold for me. Then she asked, “What exactly do you need?”

I hesitated, then admitted I needed help with debt, rent, and bills. She said money wouldn’t fix it and that I needed to take responsibility. No free handouts, just help to build a plan.

Over months, we met every Sunday. We tracked expenses, cut back, and started paying down debt. I picked up a side hustle and slowly gained control of my finances.

I stopped resenting her happiness and felt pride instead. The lesson? No one’s job is to rescue you. When you save yourself, the victory is yours.

If you feel underwater, start swimming. You can reach the surface.
