Federal agents recently searched former National Security Adviser John Bolton’s Bethesda home and Washington office, reviving a long-dormant investigation into alleged mishandling of classified information. The probe was reignited by foreign intelligence reviewed by U.S. agencies under the Biden administration. Prosecutors secured search warrants based on evidence suggesting Bolton retained sensitive materials, including intercepted communications.
No charges have been filed, but the Justice Department’s actions mark a serious escalation. FBI Director Kash Patel stated “NO ONE is above the law,” and Deputy Director Dan Bongino emphasized zero tolerance for public corruption. The case recalls the Trump administration’s 2020 attempt to block Bolton’s memoir, The Room Where It Happened, over concerns it contained classified material—concerns a judge acknowledged, though the book was released.
The investigation had been dormant until recently intercepted emails suggested Bolton used classified content in unsecured messages. CIA Director John Ratcliffe had briefed Patel on the issue during Trump’s term. Bolton is now working with defense attorney Abbe Lowell.
Trump continues to criticize Bolton, sparking speculation about political motives behind the probe, though no direct link to Trump has been found. The FBI has not disclosed what was seized, and the investigation remains ongoing as Bolton’s legal team prepares for potential charges.
