Sixteen-year-old Bryce Brooks of Atlanta died a hero while vacationing with his family in Pensacola, Florida. When he saw four younger children caught in a dangerous current, Bryce and two friends jumped in to help while others ran for help. According to his father, Shivy Brooks, Bryce cried out—not for himself, but for the children he was rescuing.
Tragically, he was pulled under. Charles “Uncle Chuck” Johnson II, a close family friend, jumped in to save Bryce but was also overcome by the current. Bystanders pulled both from the water, and they were airlifted to the hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
The tragedy shook the community. Students at Maynard Jackson High School honored Bryce with a balloon release. His mother, Crystal Brooks, said Bryce “stepped into manhood” that day. He was remembered as an honor student, fashion club member, music lover, and a caring big brother.
Bryce’s family had once appeared on Netflix’s Instant Dream Home. In the aftermath, support poured in—educator group “Get Your Teach On” raised over $78,000.
To honor his legacy, the family launched the Bryce Brooks Foundation, focusing on water safety. The foundation offers free swim lessons and lifeguard scholarships. Its first six awards included one for Uncle Chuck’s son—ensuring Bryce’s bravery lives on through others.
