Being diagnosed with stage 4 cancer is a frightening prospect, but regular checkups and self-awareness can help detect issues earlier. Self-checks are essential for noticing warning signs that might otherwise be overlooked.
UK content creator Georgie Swallow is raising awareness about Hodgkin lymphoma, a cancer that affects the lymphatic system. Swallow was diagnosed at 28, and her treatment led to early menopause before she could have children. She now shares her experience to help others recognize potential symptoms early.
Swallow ignored several warning signs in herself, assuming stress was the cause and fearing she was “wasting everyone’s time” by seeing a doctor. She noticed a lump on the side of her neck but dismissed it. The symptoms she highlights are itchy legs, night sweats, and constant fatigue.
“I would itch until I broke the skin, keeping me up all night. Doctors suggested stress, allergies, or urticaria, but nothing worked,” she recalled. “I was losing weight, experiencing night sweats, and constantly exhausted, but I thought I was just overworked.”
The experience affected her mental health as well. Swallow describes early menopause as “being hit by a bus” and shares how challenging it was to cope at 28 without peers who understood what she was going through.
Swallow’s goal is to help others recognize these seemingly minor symptoms before a diagnosis is delayed. She hopes her story will encourage people to take their health seriously, seek medical advice promptly, and possibly detect cancers like Hodgkin lymphoma earlier.
