The U.S. Senate passed a crucial bill to strengthen the country’s nuclear energy sector with an 88-2 vote, sending it to President Joe Biden. The bill aims to expedite the approval of new nuclear plants as existing ones near the end of their life spans. It also reduces licensing fees for power companies and mandates the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to streamline environmental reviews. The measure was combined with the reauthorization of the U.S. Fire Administration and firefighting grant programs. National climate advisor Ali Zaidi expressed support on social media, praising bipartisan efforts. However, the bill faces opposition from figures like Sens. Ed Markey and Bernie Sanders, as well as critics like Edwin Lyman, who argue it could compromise nuclear safety. Despite concerns, supporters argue the legislation is vital for increasing clean energy generation and bolstering national power security, with nuclear currently supplying about 20% of the U.S. electricity.
