President Donald Trump has repeatedly suggested that the U.S. should annex Canada as its “51st state,” with some political experts dismissing his comments as jokes. However, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has expressed concern that the idea is serious. In private discussions, Trudeau told Canadian business and labor leaders that Trump sees annexation as a possible solution, driven by the U.S.’s interest in Canada’s critical resources. Trudeau further noted that Trump’s actions, such as tariffs on Canadian goods, might be part of a strategy to dominate or absorb Canada. Trudeau confirmed that Canada is taking steps to address U.S. concerns about border security and illegal immigration, including a $1.3 billion security plan and appointing a new “fentanyl czar.” Trump’s threats of tariffs have raised tensions, though a 30-day delay has been agreed upon for further discussions.
