A subcontractor, II in One, is suing Thornton Tomasetti for $40 million, alleging racial discrimination in the construction of the Obama Presidential Center. The Chicago-based firm claims that Thornton Tomasetti imposed unnecessary changes to rebar standards, leading to excessive inspections and cost overruns. The lawsuit accuses Thornton Tomasetti of falsely questioning II in One’s qualifications, while favoring non-minority contractors. McGee, the owner of II in One, says these actions nearly pushed his company into bankruptcy. Thornton Tomasetti denies the claims, attributing the delays and cost issues to the subcontractor’s performance and lack of experience. The Obama Presidential Center, which has faced various delays, is expected to open in 2026, amid concerns from local activists about displacement and environmental impact.
