Donald Trump faces major backlash as he calls himself ‘king’ after making long-awaited change

Donald Trump sparked backlash after referring to himself as a “king” on social media following a major change he announced. On February 19, the 78-year-old Republican posted on Truth Social, “CONGESTION PRICING IS DEAD. Manhattan, and all of New York, is SAVED. LONG LIVE THE KING!” His statement followed a letter from Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, ending New York’s agreement on a congestion pricing program. The White House shared an image of Trump on a fake Time magazine cover, wearing a crown with the NYC skyline behind him.

Governor Kathy Hochul responded on X, emphasizing, “We are a nation of laws, not ruled by a king,” reiterating New York’s commitment to its public transit program. Other political figures, including Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and David Hogg, also criticized Trump’s comments, asserting that America does not have kings.
