Current and former air traffic controllers are raising concerns about the FAA’s hiring practices and “immunity program,” suggesting they contributed to the January 29 midair collision near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. They claim that the FAA’s focus on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) during the Obama administration led to the hiring of less qualified controllers, exacerbating staffing shortages. Combined with the FAA’s “immunity program,” which shields controllers from accountability, these issues are believed to have played a role in the crash, which killed 67 people. Additionally, a 2023 report highlighted increasing risks due to staffing shortages, with 19 serious near-misses at U.S. airports. Some have filed a class-action lawsuit alleging racial discrimination in FAA hiring practices.
