American Airlines has confirmed that Flight 5342 will never operate again following a fatal midair collision with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter on January 29, 2025, in Washington, D.C. The crash resulted in the deaths of 67 people, including 60 passengers, four crew members, and three soldiers aboard the helicopter. The crash occurred as the PSA Airlines jet was preparing to land at Ronald Reagan National Airport after departing from Wichita, Kansas. The two aircraft collided midair and crashed into the Potomac River. Despite extensive search efforts, there were no survivors. Audio from air traffic control moments before and after the collision revealed harrowing exchanges between the operators and pilots. Following the tragedy, American Airlines announced that Flight 5342 would be retired, a common practice in the aviation industry after such devastating incidents.
