New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has signaled her support for the “Bipartisan War Powers Resolution,” a bill designed to prohibit U.S. military involvement in a potential war between Israel and Iran. The resolution, introduced by Republican Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky, seeks to reassert Congress’s constitutional authority over declarations of war. “This is not our war,” Massie emphasized on X, calling on colleagues to join the effort to prevent another Middle East conflict.
Democratic Representative Ro Khanna of California is co-leading the resolution with Massie, framing it as a critical moment for Congress to reclaim its war powers. “No war in Iran,” Khanna posted, making clear that the resolution is a stance against unauthorized military escalation. Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib echoed strong support. AOC posted, “Signing on,” while Tlaib cautioned against repeating the mistakes of the Iraq War, warning that “the American people aren’t falling for it again.”
Opposition came swiftly from New York Republican Rep. Mike Lawler, a Trump-endorsed conservative. Lawler dismissed the resolution largely due to its supporters, stating, “If AOC and Massie are a yes, that’s a good bet I’ll be a no.” He cited ongoing threats from Iran and broader concerns over global security as reasons for rejecting the proposal.
Meanwhile, in the Senate, Democratic Senator Tim Kaine introduced a similar resolution calling for caution and congressional oversight before any potential military engagement. Kaine stressed the need to avoid entanglement in yet another prolonged conflict without public debate or approval.
Amid rising tensions, former President Trump dismissed cease-fire efforts following his return from the G7 summit. He insisted he would pursue a “real end” to the conflict rather than a temporary truce, further complicating bipartisan efforts aimed at de-escalation and congressional oversight.
