Hot Air Balloon Tragedy in Brazil Claims 8 Lives
On June 21, 2025, a hot air balloon carrying 21 passengers caught fire and crashed in Praia Grande, Santa Catarina, Brazil, killing eight and injuring 13. Operated by Sobrevoar Serviços Turísticos, which had a clean safety record, the balloon ignited mid-flight. According to police, the fire began in the basket. The pilot, who survived, initiated an emergency descent and urged passengers to jump before impact.
Thirteen people escaped, but others were trapped as the balloon briefly rose again before crashing. Investigators believe wind instability at takeoff may have triggered a gas leak, possibly involving a backup burner.
The victims included couples, a mother and daughter, a doctor, and a figure skater. Witnesses described horrific scenes as the balloon fell. Authorities are investigating the incident, with findings expected in 30 days. Sobrevoar has suspended operations. This follows a similar fatal ballooning accident in São Paulo days earlier, casting scrutiny on Brazil’s ballooning tourism industry.
