Attorneys: Minn. Shooter Went To Other Lawmakers’ Homes During Rampage

U.S. prosecutors have charged Vance Boelter with murder following the fatal shootings of Minnesota Democratic State Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband. According to a federal complaint, Boelter visited the homes of at least four public officials early Saturday, killing Hortman and wounding State Senator John Hoffman and his wife. Disguised as a police officer and wearing a silicone mask, Boelter allegedly opened fire on officers before entering the Hortmans’ home. Acting U.S. Attorney Joseph Thompson described the attack as “truly chilling” and “the stuff of nightmares.” Boelter faces six federal charges, including murder and stalking, and is also expected to face state charges.

Authorities recovered five firearms, a large amount of ammunition, and a manifesto from Boelter’s abandoned SUV, which had fake police plates. The document listed over 70 public figures as potential targets, including Gov. Tim Walz and Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan. Boelter’s wife reportedly sent a cryptic message to family after the attacks, while Boelter warned her to stay away from their home due to possible armed conflict. Investigators also found “No Kings” flyers in his vehicle, possibly linking the crime to anti-Trump protests. In response, authorities heightened security for those named in the manifesto and advised the public to avoid related demonstrations. Boelter was captured Sunday evening after a two-day manhunt and is scheduled to appear in federal court Monday in St. Paul.
