‘Best Position For Conservative Victories’: Johnson Unveils Plan To Avoid Govt Shutdown

House Speaker Mike Johnson introduced a two-step plan, the “Further Continuing Appropriations and Other Extensions Act of 2024,” to prevent a government shutdown.

It splits funding deadlines, with some programs expiring January 19 and others February 2, aiming to avoid a massive year-end spending bill.

Johnson says the plan promotes fiscal responsibility, oversight on Ukraine aid, and U.S.-Mexico border reforms. It excludes aid for Ukraine and Israel, as separate funding was proposed for Israel. Senate Democrats criticized the plan as overly complex.

Johnson also drew attention for his modest finances, unlike past wealthy speakers. Some Democrats called his disclosure “strange,” while Republicans praised him as a relatable, non-wealthy leader.
