CNN’s chief data analyst, Harry Enten, laughed off Elon Musk’s announcement of a new “America Party,” highlighting its extremely limited support. On “CNN News Central,” Enten noted only 4% of voters both like Musk and dislike the Republican Party, making it nearly impossible for Musk’s third-party bid to gain traction.
Enten compared the effort to “selling sand in the desert,” explaining that most Musk supporters already back the GOP, so there’s no real base for a new party.
Musk launched the America Party to challenge the current two-party system, which he said is “bankrupting our country with waste & graft.” But former President Trump blasted Musk on Truth Social, calling the idea “off the rails” and warning it would cause “Complete and Total DISRUPTION & CHAOS.”
Trump also criticized Musk in person, calling the third-party plan “ridiculous” and emphasizing that America’s political system has long been two-party.
Once close allies, Musk and Trump’s relationship soured after the passage of Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill,” which Musk vehemently opposed and vowed to challenge Republican supporters of.
Musk hasn’t yet detailed the America Party’s platform or leadership but said the focus will be on congressional races before considering a presidential candidate.
Meanwhile, Trump threatened to cut federal contracts and subsidies for Musk’s companies, blaming Musk’s opposition on lost electric vehicle tax credits and the withdrawal of a SpaceX astronaut nominee for NASA.
