Conservative Supreme Court Justice Responds to Calls to Retire

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito has no plans to retire. Sources close to Alito emphasized that he has never viewed his position from a political standpoint, and the idea of stepping down for political reasons is not in line with his character. Despite speculation, particularly among legal activists, about Alito’s potential retirement so President-elect Donald Trump could appoint a younger conservative, these rumors have been dismissed.

At 74, Alito is among the three oldest justices on the court, sparking debates about the court’s future. With Trump’s recent election, Republicans see an opportunity to fill vacancies with younger conservative justices. However, justices of all ideological leanings prefer to view themselves as above partisan politics, and recent discussions about potential retirements have become frustrating.

Alito, known for his pivotal role in overturning Roe v. Wade, remains committed to his role and has already begun hiring clerks for upcoming terms.
