Conservative Supreme Court Justice Responds to Calls to Retire

Despite increasing pressure from activist groups, Justices Samuel Alito and Sonia Sotomayor have no plans to retire from the U.S. Supreme Court. Alito, 74, dismissed speculation about stepping down for political reasons, with sources emphasizing his commitment to the job.

Sotomayor, also in her 70s and managing type 1 diabetes, reportedly remains in good health and plans to stay.

As Trump’s re-election and Republican control of the Senate raise stakes, some conservatives urge older justices like Alito and Clarence Thomas to step aside for younger nominees. However, insiders say both justices remain active and engaged.

With lifetime appointments, any vacancy could reshape the court for decades. The memory of Justice Ginsburg’s death before the 2020 election continues to influence debates on judicial succession.
