Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) has withdrawn from the race to become the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, acknowledging she lacked support among her peers. Crockett came in last in a vote of key Democrats, losing to Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.).
She said her leadership style “was not what they were looking for” and emphasized the importance of party unity. Despite stepping back, Crockett pledged to remain a “loud and proud” team player. Her exit follows recent controversial remarks during a podcast interview, where she described Trump supporters as “sick” and the U.S. as being in a “mental health crisis” due to his influence. Crockett also criticized a military parade honoring the Army’s 250th anniversary, calling it exploitative. She expressed longing for “regular Republicans” like George W. Bush, contrasting them with Trump. The remarks have drawn backlash and added tension as Democrats seek a unified strategy amid mounting political and committee battles ahead of the 2024 election.
