The U.S. Senate confirmed former Republican Senator David Perdue as President Donald Trump’s new ambassador to China in a bipartisan vote, with more than a dozen Democrats joining Republicans. The post is a critical one, given the ongoing tensions between the U.S. and China over trade and national security. Perdue, who unsuccessfully attempted to unseat Georgia Governor Brian Kemp in 2022 with Trump’s backing, will now serve in a prominent diplomatic role.
At the same time, Democrats are facing a decline in support among young voters, a traditionally reliable base. Political commentator Brett Cooper highlighted this generational disconnect during an appearance on Fox & Friends, stating that many young people feel unrepresented and disillusioned with the aging leadership in Congress. Citing figures like retiring Sen. Dick Durbin, she argued that the party appears out of touch.
A recent poll by the Harvard Kennedy School supports this view, showing Democratic congressional approval among young voters has plummeted to 23%, down from 42% in 2017. While Republicans fare slightly better at 29%, they too remain unpopular with this demographic. Trump, meanwhile, maintains a 31% approval rating among young voters, consistent with his numbers from his first term.
Cooper suggested that figures like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez might resonate more with Gen Z due to their emotional and social media-savvy messaging. However, she noted that traditional strategies may be losing effectiveness, and young voters are demanding authenticity and real representation.
