Donald and Melania Trump face backlash over ‘heartless’ post about Pope Francis’ funeral

Donald Trump and Melania Trump have faced backlash over a social media post about Pope Francis’ funeral.

Pope Francis died on Easter Monday (21 April) at age 88 following a stroke and heart failure.

The Vatican announced a nine-day mourning period, with the funeral set for Saturday (26 April).

Trump posted on Truth Social that he and Melania were “looking forward” to attending the funeral, sparking criticism online. Many called the phrasing inappropriate and insensitive.

The funeral will be held at 10am local time and led by the dean of the College of Cardinals. A new Pope will be chosen after a 15–20 day conclave
