Donald Trump calls Texas flash flood “Biden setup”

The recent catastrophic flooding in Texas has resulted in at least 80 confirmed deaths, with rising concerns about who is responsible. The floodwaters in the Guadalupe River surged over 26 feet in just 45 minutes, taking a tragic toll during the Fourth of July weekend. Among the worst-hit locations was Camp Mystic, a Christian girls’ summer camp, which lost 27 campers and staff members. The camp expressed deep sorrow, offering prayers and support to grieving families while search efforts continue for those still missing.

As rescue and recovery operations proceed, blame has emerged over the failure to adequately warn residents. Critics point to federal budget cuts to the National Weather Service (NWS) made earlier this year under President Donald Trump. Some Texas officials argue the agency underestimated rainfall and failed to properly communicate the storm’s severity. However, Trump refuted this claim, attributing responsibility to what he called a “Biden setup” and labeling the disaster a “100-year catastrophe.”

Meteorologists and former NWS staff defended the forecasting efforts, explaining that predictions were based on real-time data, and the sudden intensity of the rainfall made it difficult to issue more precise warnings. Flash floods, they noted, are inherently hard to forecast, especially in terms of delivering warnings to at-risk populations effectively.

Internal NWS issues have also surfaced. Two critical leadership positions at the San Antonio forecasting office were reportedly unfilled at the time of the storm. While staffing levels were described as sufficient overall, the lack of key personnel may have hindered coordination with media and emergency services.

Despite the controversy, Trump insisted federal staffing had no role in the flooding’s severity. He emphasized the unexpected nature of the event, adding that Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem remains on the ground. Whether federal decisions played a part remains under investigation, as the nation mourns this unprecedented loss.
