House GOP Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) criticized the Nancy Pelosi-appointed January 6 Select Committee for reportedly deleting or password-protecting two terabytes of data just before Republicans took control of the House in January 2023. The House Administration Committee’s Oversight Subcommittee found that over 100 files were deleted or encrypted during the transition. Stefanik accused the committee of obstructing justice, calling it “illegitimate and unconstitutional.” Former Rep. Liz Cheney responded, linking to a past statement from Stefanik about the Capitol riot. The controversy centers on missing data, as Republican Chairman Barry Loudermilk’s committee only received two terabytes instead of the expected four. Digital forensics revealed that some files had been deleted, while others remained encrypted, preventing full transparency on the investigation.
