Global health experts are expressing concern after President Donald Trump announced significant cuts to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the world’s largest single donor of humanitarian aid. USAID, which employs around 10,000 people, spent over $40 million globally in 2023, funding critical programs like women’s health, clean water access, and HIV/AIDS treatment. Trump’s decision to freeze aid programs and reduce the agency’s workforce has sparked worry among health professionals. Dr. Tom Wingfield highlighted that the cuts could worsen the spread of diseases like tuberculosis and diarrhea. Meanwhile, in South Africa, halting HIV services has eroded trust. Experts warn that stopping funding for vaccines could lead to the resurgence of preventable diseases like cholera and malaria. A judge recently blocked the administration’s move to place over 2,000 USAID workers on paid leave.
