Recent severe weather and flooding in Springfield led to a tragic loss for farmer Jared Blackwelder. After hearing loud crashes, Blackwelder discovered that all 32 of his dairy cows had been struck by lightning and piled together in the pasture. The cows likely sought shelter under trees during the storm. The loss is not only emotionally devastating, but also financially catastrophic, as each cow was valued at $2,000 to $2,500, totaling nearly $60,000. While Blackwelder has insurance, it’s uncertain if it will cover the full loss. Such incidents are rare but represent significant risks for farmers.
