In a rare bipartisan move, four Senate Republicans joined Democrats to oppose President Trump ’s proposed tariffs on Canadian imports.
The Senate passed a resolution with a 51- 48 vote, aiming to block the tariffs.
Republicans voting against the administration included Rand Paul, Susan Collins, Mitch McConnell, and Lisa Murkowski.
Although the measure was symbolic due to House GOP opposition, it reflects unusual resistance within the GOP-led Senate. Democrats argue the tariffs, introduced under a national emergency declaration, could escalate a global trade war and harm consumers.
Trump’s tariff policy, aimed at boosting U.S. manufacturing, faces backlash, with critics concerned about rising prices. Despite the Senate’s rebuke, House GOP leaders are unlikely to take action, though Democrats plan to bypass them with a procedural resolution.
