Group Founded By Mike Pence Comes Out Against RFK Jr.’s Nomination

Former Vice President Mike Pence, through his organization Advancing American Freedom, is urging GOP senators to oppose Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s nomination as Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary in the Trump administration. Pence’s group cites Kennedy’s past support for abortion rights, which they argue is inconsistent with the Republican Party’s pro-life principles. Despite Kennedy’s recent statements aligning himself with pro-life views, conservatives remain skeptical due to his previous support for Roe v. Wade and opposition to abortion bans before fetal viability.

Kennedy’s political journey has been unconventional, moving from a progressive stance on environmental issues to seeking alignment with Republican priorities. His recent outreach to the GOP, including a commitment to limiting abortion access, has raised concerns among figures like Pence, who emphasize that Kennedy’s past positions contradict the values expected of an HHS Secretary. Pence’s objections reflect his longstanding advocacy for protecting the rights of the unborn.

However, some Republican senators, after meeting with Kennedy, support his nomination. They highlight his alignment with other GOP priorities, such as reducing government overreach and opposing certain public health mandates, and believe his willingness to challenge established norms makes him a strong candidate for HHS Secretary. This division within the GOP showcases the tension between ideological purity and political pragmatism.

As the Senate prepares to vote, the debate reflects broader ideological battles within the Republican Party. While Pence and his allies oppose Kennedy, his growing support within the GOP suggests his nomination could succeed. If confirmed, Kennedy will face the challenge of reconciling his past positions with his new role and navigating a polarized political landscape.
