Minnesota Governor Tim Walz will speak at Democratic conventions in South Carolina and California this weekend, further boosting his national profile after his 2024 vice presidential run.
Walz is expected to sharply criticize Donald Trump and rally Democrats to defend their values. His visit comes as Minnesota’s legislative session wraps up, with Walz confident budget negotiations will conclude by Saturday.
Though he hasn’t announced 2028 plans, he’s widely expected to seek a third term as governor. Both states play key roles in the Democratic nomination process, and Rep. Jim Clyburn invited Walz to speak in South Carolina, where he’ll also attend Clyburn’s annual fish fry. Maryland Governor Wes Moore, another potential 2028 contender, will also speak. Walz has kept a low profile with former running mate Kamala Harris since their loss to Trump and J.D. Vance in 2024, though he described their relationship as professional and amicable.
