High school girl claims first-place podium spot despite losing to trans athlete

A viral moment at a California track meet has reignited the national debate over transgender athletes in women’s sports. During the CIF Southern Section Finals, Crean Lutheran’s Reese Hogan, who placed second in the triple jump, stepped onto the first-place podium after the event’s winner, AB Hernandez—a transgender female athlete—left.

Hernandez, who also won the long jump, faced intense criticism online, with many calling the results unfair. Supporters argue she followed the rules and earned her wins, while critics say biological differences undermine fairness in women’s sports.

The incident comes amid a growing political battle. Former President Trump recently signed an executive order banning transgender women from competing in female sports, declaring the “war on women’s sports” over. Some states, like Maine, have resisted such bans.

Hernandez responded to backlash by saying, “I’m still a child,” pointing out her vulnerability and calling for understanding.

The issue remains deeply divisive—and far from resolved.
