Music possesses a unique beauty that resonates with us in ways nothing else can. It has the power to evoke laughter, tears, bravery, and reflection. A good piece of music can significantly improve our mood; when stressed or angry, the right song can soothe our minds and help us relax.
Take Lindon Beckford, who brings joy to patients at Boston’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center through his singing. He has been singing since childhood, and it’s a natural part of his life. Beckford discovered the impact of his music while transporting patients, initially for his own comfort.
“I sang all the time at work,” he shared. “It was a way to feel better, but then I realized someone was listening.” After realizing his singing helped others, he embraced it more fully.
With over 30 years at the hospital, Beckford has learned how to ease patients’ anxieties. His songs not only comfort them but also create connections.
One memorable moment was when a patient sang along with him, affirming the profound effect music can have. Beckford’s care and melodies truly make a difference for those in his care.
